ANDREW SMEETHI was introduced to the game by my father, but didn’t grow to love it until my late teens. I was fortunate to win the BC Junior Championships at 17 and that spring boarded the rest of my golf career. My Instructor since age 12 until his passing was the late great Bill Mahwinny, one of the top players in Canada many moons ago. He showed me some many things about the game and helped me more then anyone else to become successful.
I was awarded a golf scholarship to Weber State University in Ogden, Utah and enjoyed a solid four years. I attained my degree in psychology and MVP’d three out of the four years. I won our conference championships twice and qualified for the 1995 NCAA championships as an individual by tying a guy by the name of Tiger Woods (maybe you’ve heard of him) at the West Regional Championships.
After graduating from university I set out into the world of professional golf, playing the mini tours. I qualified for the Canadian Tour the following year and spent six full seasons playing against some of the best up and coming pro’s you now hear about on the PGA Tour. Guys like Brandt Snedeker, Tim Heron, Notah Begay, Mike Weir and Tim Clark, I played with them all and gained an invaluable education along the way. This knowledge isn’t gained by reading books or in a classroom, and now I can pass this to you
My teaching philosophy follows Butch Harmon’s, which is to instruct the student and work with their specific strengths and weaknesses to bring the most out of their game. Like Mr. Harmon, whose academy I’ve attended for instruction, I am a firm believer that the swing principles are few and a good instructor is able to recognize his student abilities and help them learn their own swing, instead of teaching a method.
I’ve spent that pass season instructing junior golfers of all abilities and if you or your junior want to be sure of getting started on the right path this season, come see me at Westwood Plateau Golf Academy
Regards
Andrew Smeeth
