One of BC’s Best Companies to Work For in 2008!

Westwood Plateau has once again been recognized as a company that stands out in British Columbia – and this time it has to do with being a great place to work! We are pleased to announce that BC Business Magazine and Caliber Leadership Systems have recently recognized Westwood Plateau Golf & Entertainment as being the 11th Best Company to Work for in BC for 2008!

“Best” can be a relative term, but BC Business Magazine teamed up with the organizational consultants Caliber Leadership Systems to determine quantifiable rankings.  They gathered input from employers and employees alike, asking them to fill in multiple-choice surveys, which were translated into numerical scores. They gave the most weight to employee input with employee responses to a 52 question survey accounting for 70 percent of a company’s final score. Employer responses accounted for 20 percent and employee participation rates accounted for 10 percent. In the ‘Top Companies With More Than 100 Employees’ category, Westwood Plateau was competing against no less than 46 other BC based businesses which featured the likes of 1-800-Got-Junk, Flight Centre North America, Microsoft Canada Development Centre, Cactus Club Restaurants and this year’s Best Company to Work for in BC which was Next Level Games Inc.

Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club has been named a “Wildlife Friendly Golf Course”, by the Institute of Urban Ecology at Douglas College. The partial findings of an I.U.E. investigation into the wildlife habitat value of three golf courses in the Greater Vancouver Regional District were published in the Institutes newsletter this fall. Nadine Pinnell, an I.U.E. Eco-Ed Coordinator writes, “Forested areas, undisturbed native vegetation, and small bodies of water throughout the [golf] course provide lots of natural habitat for wildlife. Course managers have further enhanced this natural habitat by installing nesting boxes for wood ducks, songbirds and bats”. The newsletter also goes on to mention Westwood’s five-year endeavour to be certified as a cooperative wildlife sanctuary by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System of Canada.

Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club Course Superintendant, Bruce Thrasher, says, “In 1995 the Golf Course owners made a commitment to the community to design and provide a golf course that integrated the natural habitat of the surrounding area. Over the years we have continued to uphold the integrity of that original design”.

The Institutes Final report featuring studies of Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club, Guildford Golf Club in Surrey, and Eagle Quest at Musqueam, will be published in December.

Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club has been ranked as the number five golf course for “Best in Customer Service” in North America, Hawaii and the Caribbean. In the May 2002 issue of Golf Digest Magazine, some 20,000 readers evaluated more than 6500 golf courses and from this survey Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club was ‘Fifth Best’ out of all courses with a rating of 4.81. In addition, the facility was awarded 4 ½ stars in the overall category, placing it among the very best in Canada.

Golf Digest’s biennial feature, Best Places to Play in North America, Hawaii and the Caribbean, has been around since 1963 and is considered the “Rosetta stone for the public golfer”.
According to Golf Digest what constitutes the difference between a rating of five stars (”golf at its absolute best”) and a four star (”outstanding”) lies squarely within the hearts and minds of the magazines readers.
